***** Very friendly

I haven't been in an east side bar in a long time and they sometimes have the reputation of being snooty -- and this place is a far cry from my usual bear hang outs -- but I have to say everyone was very friendly. This is an attractive spot with a small piano lounge located in the back. Mixed ages, so anyone should feel comfortable here. No doubt it gets a few commuters waiting for the train to Connecticut, but even if they have wives and kids it's unlikely that they're straight, if you know what I mean. I was here mid-evening on a Sunday night -- not packed, but not dead either -- so no commuters were present. Very friendly pianist and customers, but only one bear/otter -- me!

***** The way a gay bar should be

I have to say Uncle charlies is Great. The only bizzare thing is there are people of ALL ages, young old, and in between, lots of hot straight commuters from Grand Central, lots of hot hotel/broadway workers. Bartenders Jacob and Ken are very cute and friendly. I esp like the outdoor patio, where you can smoke or eat/

***** Great Gay addition

Uncle Charlie's has been around for several months. My loss in not stopping earlier. It's up a flight of stairs, 2nd floor in a townhouse. A handsome long bar, plenty of elbow room. Terrific piano entertainment, and an open mic. Uncle Charlie's hosts a special cabaret evening every Thursday. A comfy lounge, outdoor patio, friendly staff, and a five hour happy hour. Every day, there's a special going on -- including Silver Daddy Sundays. It's half-a-block from Grand Central -- the only gay bar in the nabe -- and one night, around 6 pm, several well-dressed gentleman popped in for quick drinks before catching the train. And though they looked like married commuters, when we'd exchange glances, my gaydar kicked in ... and so did theirs.
