La Santa Muerte, the Mexican Folk Saint of Death, has grown tremendously popular in the last decade. Clad as the Grim Reaper, Santisima Muerte (also known as la Flaca, la Parca, la Niña Blanca) inspires both devotion and fierce opposition. Come learn the history and lore of the Saint, her attributes and styles of working, including a detailed look at the Three Robed System common to the Northern and Borderland expressions of her cult. Two Santa Muerteros (devotees of la Santa Muerte), Steven Bragg and Jesse Hathaway Diaz will share their knowledge of the Saint, and the lecture will be followed by a traditional public service for la Flaka. Both Steven and Jesse are both adherents of the Three Robed System, Steven is the founder and owner of the New Orleans Chapel of the Santisima Muerte, and Jesse comes from a Mexican curanderismo background and has apprenticed for two decades under curandero/as working with la Muerte. This lecture is a rare opportunity to see two Muerteros from divergent backgrounds with the Saint appear together for the first time, to discuss and honor la Santisima Muerte.

Steven Bragg is a Santa Muertero, a person who is a devotee and spiritual worker of the Mexican folk saint La Santisima Muerte. He is also an Houngan Asogwe of Haitian Vodou, a Padre Nganga of Palo Mayombe, and a 3* High Priest in four traditions of witchcraft. He has been practicing witchcraft for the last 20 years, has been involved in the Vodou community of New Orleans since 2002, and is the High Priest of a local Gardnerian and Alexandrian coven. In 2012 Steven formed the New Orleans Chapel of the Santisima Muerte, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting information about la Santisima Muerte and houses a public shrine for this miraculous saint.
Jesse Hathaway Diaz is a folklorist, diviner, artist and performer living in New York City. With initiations in several forms of witchcraft from both Europe and the Americas, he is also a lifelong student of Mexican Curanderismo and devotee of la Santisima Muerte, an initiated Olosha in Lucumi, and a Tatá Quimbanda.
