HAG presents: ECTOPLASMS

Ectoplasm refers to a vomit-like substance produced by mediums during seances, supposedly as a manifestation of otherworldly spirits. For this performance salon and accompanying zine, we would like to use the phenomenon of ectoplasm as a way of thinking about the creation of the abject, what for Julia Kristeva constitutes that which has been discharged from the body, rendered excrement. How does the body function as a sight of transactions, of exits and entrances? In what ways is the abject haunted? What ghosts are coming out of you? GIVE US UR BLOOD UR TEARS UR PUKE. an evening of performances featuring: CHARLOTTE CULLEN EMILY JANE MONICA MCCLURE SONIA CHOI ANDREA CRESPO EMILY JANE is a Montreal-based writer and performer who spent her childhood in the polar bear capital of the world. Part of her wants to be Lauren Berlant, and another part wants to marry her sofa and remain forever prone. She is careful always to match whichever book she's reading to her outfit before leaving the house. MONICA MCCLURE’s debut collection, Tender Data, will be published by Birds, LLC this year. She is the author of the chapbooks, Mood Swing, from Snacks Press and Mala, forthcoming from Poor Claudia. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Tin House, Jubilat, Fence, The Los Angeles Review, The Lit Review, Lambda Literary Review’s Spotlight Series, The Awl, Spork and elsewhere. She curates Atlas, a collaboration series of visual artists and poets, and lives in New York City. SONIA CHOI IS a multi-media artist currently residing in New York City. Her work mostly deals with political issues of today, ranging from global scales to the personal domestic life. Raised through diverse contexts as a self-proclaimed nomad, the content of her work has been inspired by different reference points that have been reiterated to her own context. She explores food culture, the flesh, intimacy, and psychic traumas with intent of giving and expressing empathy -- to connect the dots from parallels that exist in disparate times and spaces. From a nation-less identity, she struggles a lot in recognizing her work through the stories of a faraway family, as well as the stories that she uncovers from present grounds. These diverse geographical locations have given her first-hand experiences in understanding the complexity of globalization, socio-economic phenomena and the relationships of people and identities. She explores material possibilities, experiments with their potentials, and thinks of the object through its etymology and its movement in time and space. This is a way for her to find honesty, in the careful stripping of layers. ANDREA CRESPO is a New York-based artist working toward her BFA. She is a male-to-female transsexual previously diagnosed with “asperger’s-like” symptoms, gender dysphoria, attention-deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline-personality disorder, major depressive disorder, and bipolar II disorder.
