Why Jay’s House?
At present, there are no formal resources such as shelters or drop-in centers for queer adults who are experiencing homelessness. Jay Toole pioneered the only project that focused explicitly on supporting and advocating for LGBTQ adults living in the New York City shelter system. She was instrumental in changing policy, within the NYC Department of Homeless Services, allowing transgender and intersex shelter clients to self determine which gendered side of the system they wanted to enter. This policy change was crucial for the safety and well-being of our trans, intersex, and gender non conforming community members. Jay’s House continues this important work through outreach, advocacy, and facilitation of support groups in NYC homeless shelters. With the expansion of its services, Jay’s House looks forward to serving more shelters across the city in the coming months. With community help and support, the long-term plan is for Jay’s House to establish the first safe shelter for our homeless adult queer community. A shelter for US, by US!
Jay’s House Mission
We are a group of queer (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and gender-non-conforming) individuals who believe that shelter/housing is a basic right. Jay's House is committed to helping our homeless adult queers to transition to permanent housing in a safe environment that is free of harassment and physical violence, including on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender presentation. We believe and are committed to helping our adult queer homeless community whether they have substance abuse, physical or mental health disabilities or criminal records. We will always ensure homeless LGBTGNCITSQ people the space to join our board and that they will have a say on the governance of our organization/board.
