Gym Sportsbar

(260 Ratings)
A genuine sports bar in the heart of Chelsea

If the real gym's too crowded, leave your manly Daisy Dukes and tank on and grab a beer with the other gym bunnies. You'll never miss the game at this Chelsea favorite (in every sense of the word).

Ok.. They're winning me over

I have to say, the first few times I went to the Gym I was not impressed. They have definitely improved the music and lighting. The crowd has definitely improved, also. A good time can be had at the Gym. I still find the "Smoker's Corral" out front funny..

Nice no-atttitude bar for all ages

Gym is a relaxed, convivial cruise and conversation -- mostly conversation -- bar that caters to gay men of mixed ages with the median age around thirty plus. However, the over forty and fifty crowd will not feel too out of place, and neither will twenty somethings. I agree that the atmosphere is "butcher" than say, The Monster, but not quite as macho as The Eagle. There is always a smattering of "femmes" and happily no one puts them down. While the gay community includes a great many sports fans and athletes, you do not really have to love sports to go to Gym [but it does not hurt if you like sports fans and athletes]. However, if sports are not your bag, you should probably stay out of the place during Monday Night Football or other major sports nights as it will probably be a drag. I found drink prices to be relatively cheap and the cocktails strong, even during the two for one cocktail hours. I think this one will be around for awhile. Friendly bartenders, too.

Great place to meet friends

I stop at this place when I need to meet up with friends before bar hopping. There's a nice crowd (mostly thirty-something) that's a little more manly then other chelsea hangouts. I'm not much into sports, but the sports bar feel makes it different than the rest.

Sports fans in Chelsea?

I've got to give credit to the owners of Gym for opening a new bar in the heart of Chelsea while others have faded and for taking a chance on a sports theme in a less-than-butch market. So far, it seems to be working. As expected, the crowd is somewhat more masculine than most Chelsea bars...but is certainly no Eagle. The front patio offers a chance to mingle with passer-by's on 8th Ave.
