Gym Sportsbar

(260 Ratings)
A genuine sports bar in the heart of Chelsea

If the real gym's too crowded, leave your manly Daisy Dukes and tank on and grab a beer with the other gym bunnies. You'll never miss the game at this Chelsea favorite (in every sense of the word).

excellent hangout spot

This is a great place. The bartenders are friendly, the mix of crowd is excellent. The layout/design of the place is cool. Downstairs is also great when open. My favorite NYC bar. Boxers may have more TVs, but Gym Bar has a better vibe.

More football than cross country

The men at GYM are a little more football than cross country if you catch my drift. If you're into the burly type, this place is for you. Hot beefcakes everywhere...woof.

Friendly crowd if you are with friends, not so if you are in your own

It seems like a nice bar. Relaxed with good music. It's a real buzz when you walk in (I did on Saturday night) but after an hour I realised guys there were all catching up with each other. Not a lot of cruising going on.

Not a genuine sports bar. Not at all.

I'll give Gym props for showing the Rangers game on my last visit there. I wanted to see hockey in a gay sports bar and Boxers wasn't showing it at all. That being said...I wish sports bars would have the audio on when local teams are playing. And why the heck is the smoking porch outside used so much? Ick! Tobacco and sports haven't been compatible for decades. The pool table seemed to be in the way of my view of the large screen, too. But the screens were showing what I wanted to see, at least, and happy hour drink prices were nice. I do prefer it to Boxers, but New York still needs a real gay sports bar.

Sport Lite

If a gay dorm room for a guy wanting to be sporty for straight friends in a Pac-10 school could be turned into a bar, well here it is. Couch, pool exposed brick, flat panel TVs... All it missed were the WII setups and beer tubes. Otherwise, utterly conventional video bar with video bar attention problems. Efficient if humorless bartenders, adequate selection of drinks. Since nobody seemed to be actually watching the world cup (Japan vs the Netherlands night I was there) the video hypnosis problem wasn't so bad. I found it amusing that no fewer than 18 men were wearing plaid long baggy shorts and grey teeshirts. I hadn't seen such an unsexy bar uniform since, well, college. Conservative, conventional, clearly neighborhood bar that really only has location going for it.
