Gay Village Bar Crawl - Sun 10/29

 

Since at least the end of the 19th century bar culture has loomed large in the gay community. During this three-hour bar crawl, learn why bars have played such an outsized role in gay life. Join us as we tip back our glasses at four historic gay bars and lesbian bars, on a lively and entertaining tour of New York City’s most storied neighborhood, Greenwich Village.

Learn from veterans of Ty’s, Stonewall and Julius’ as tell us about their bars’ place in history. Discover who the woman was who opened the first non-mob-controlled lesbian nightclub, and how she has been immortalized. Hear tell why the Village waterfront bars welcomed the rougher side of gay life. Learn about the bar where a gay protest resulted in an important NYS court decision three years prior to Stonewall. Get to know what the biggest threats to today’s gay bar culture are.

Highlights include Keith Haring mural “Once Upon a Time” at The LGBTQ Center; the long-gone waterfront bars named Ramrod, Kellers and Sneakers; bottoms up at four gay bars and lesbian bars in the West Village; New York City’s AIDS Memorial; and the Stonewall National Monument in Christopher Park.

Some non-gay, non-bar sights include the cute little wooden house at 121 Charles Street and the very handsome one at 17 Grove Street; and the Twin Sisters on Commerce Street.

The Tour’s cost is $30 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 years and older.

Leave and depart at 2pm from the lobby of the LGBT Center, 208 W 13 Street. This is a 3-hour Tour of drinking, history, comradery, fun and good times. We meet in the lobby of the LGBTQ Center at 208 W. 13th St, Manhattan.

It is strongly suggested that you travel light. We are on our feet for the entire time. Heavy backpacks and shopping bags can only distract from your enjoyment of the Tour. The terrain of this walking tour is level. You will get a good walking workout on this Tour! It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.


All sales are final. The Gay Village Bar Crawl will take place rain or shine. All tours are conducted in English. Tour does not include any drinks. All Tour participants assume normal liability for their behavior during the Tour.
