Gay Bars That Are Gone

FREE WALKING TOUR 6 - 8pm with your hosts Michael Ryan and Kyle Supley AND special guests who were THERE! including Nora Burns, Mike Albo, and David Ilku of Unitard! with more being added soon! FOLLOWING THE WALK we have the AFTER DARK DISCO PARTY 8pm until ?? at the historic Julius bar(159 W. 10th St.) with killer tunes from Kyle aka Dj Yestergay! From ballrooms to discos to piano bars, we'll observe the shifting typology of the gay bar. Together, we’ll cover everything from the raids to the raves. Primarily focused on the Chelsea and Village haunts, we’ll explore what’s left of the warehouses, vaults, and townhouses of gay bars gone by and share the most sordid details we can dig up. Most importantly, we'll hear from "those who were there" and indulge "those who wish they were". All this, in the name of sparking a conversation about the city's ever-changing social landscape and how to properly preserve and spotlight New York's "lavender landmarks." In the spirit of Mr. George Chauncey and Ms. Jane Jacobs, we'll mix together a bit of history and a bit more crowd-sourced candid observation. As we’re sure many have said before: "Meet me at The Roxy!" We're so excited to be back after such a great turnout for the past two years! If you've joined us before, we're switching up the route a bit this year. Come walk again!
