Originally conceived as a documentary about transgender artist and writer Eli Levén the story transformed into something more expansive: a visual fantasy of delicately flavored contrasts, of delirium and sensuality, distillation and disjuncture, and the reclamation of femininity from the destruction of masculine forces. The protagonist, Eli, is a young "boy hag-lady," caught in between genders, more than just a boy or girl, with an eye for feminine androgyny. Eli struggles with anxiety, violence, and the problematic nature of self-definition; and when simply remaining alive is a task, reciprocating love becomes harder still.
Awarded both the Nordic Vision Prize and Audience Award at the 2012 Gothenburg Film Festival, She Male Snails is simply not to be missed. A truly inventive experiment in both form and narrative, the film is a queer modern romance of self-actualization, longing, and the exquisite existence of snails, alluring and absorbing from its opening shot to the very last emergence from the water.

2012, Sweden/Denmark, video, color, sound, Swedish w/ English subtitles, 72 min. New York Premiere
"Real beauty can give you an experience of reality being broken into pieces. You get a glimpse of something that's bigger than you."
MIX is an organization that is constantly on the lookout for new and exciting work by queer artists from all walks and persuasions. And almost nothing is more exciting to us than being able to watch these movers and shakers grow, evolve, and create the work that will ultimately define a new era of queer life and art.
Ester Martin Bergsmark is one of those makers. After a hot-hot-hot showing of their 2009 short video Fruitcake, a hyper-erotic ode to the anus, we are thrilled to present She Male Snails, Bergsmark’s new feature, at our 25th festival!
