The Monster

(1779 Ratings)
A West Village institution

Walk in at street level to the piano bar/lounge which retains its historic charm. Don't let the vintage decor discourage you, pull up a stool and the friendly crowd and fun singers will have you hooked. For a change of pace, work your way downstairs to find drag shows and a dance floor.

Door Men are difficult,... Not as Crowded as it used to Be,.. Drink Prices are CASH ONLY TOO ... and they Charge Cover Charge 15 minutes before LAST CALL,... Maybe they are hurting for MONEY

Nice Bar But Door Staff Not Gay Friendly

I have have been going to the Monster for almost a year and have had numerous issues with the "Straight" door staff being aggressively rude and even putting their hands on people in a forceful manner in an situations that didnt warrant it. They openly cruise and show preferential treatment to straight female and rudly interact with the gay clientele. When trying to contact someone in management they simply refer you to another doorman who always sides with the other making it impossible to really rectify the situation which is why I am writing this review in the hope the ownership will make some changes. The bar staff is great and so are the patrons to bar the first impression of the bar is so poor at the front door.

... not my cuppa tea

Completely misled by a big fan, I was utterly dismayed when stepping in. True: it was middle of the week and a extremely wet and frisky April night but we found the venue almost empty except for a cheerful group of clearly usual patrons gathered around the piano devotedly singing Musicals tunes (yesssss, I acknowledge my weakness). I mildly appreciated the extremely kitsch deco, it had a charming “je ne sais quoi”, indeed. Correct by limit icy staff served us acceptable value for money drinks. After a brief tour of the facilities (a visit to the loo) I discovered my bf had vanished in thin air... just to find him outside having a ciggie, his excuse to avoid a couple of customers who almost sit on his lap while I was gone :@ We did not visit the basement club outraged by the cover fee and the complete lack of expectations in terms of ambiance and/or crowd. My big fan friend still does not understand why we left the place without a better impression.
