Rockwood Music Hall returns to Lincoln Center to present its fifth chapter of Downtown Comes Uptown. Thursday, September 15, 2015 at 7:30pm. FREE SHOW. The Marcus King Band Ruby Amanfu BAILEN Alice Phoebe Lou Hosted by Rita Houston from WFUV Over the course of two nights, Rockwood Music Hall, Lincoln Center, and WFUV partner to spotlight four talented artists in two distinctly different settings. These unique artists bring songs and stories of their everyday stomping grounds, the downtown club scene, to a new audience at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium, as they perform selections of their work in a showcase hosted by WFUV radio personality Rita Houston. The following night, all four artists return to the Lower East Side with full performances at Rockwood Music Hall. Presented in collaboration with Rockwood Music Hall & WFUV. At only 20 years of age, Marcus King’s dazzling musical ability is evident throughout The Marcus King Band, the young phenom’s 2nd full-length LP and first for Fantasy Records. Operating within the fiery brand of American roots music that King calls "soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock," the album highlights King’s gorgeous, rough-hewn vocals, soaring guitar work and heartfelt songwriting all amidst a group of masterful musicians who, together, are quickly becoming one of the country’s most sought after live acts. Ruby Amanfu Whether on Beyonce’s new album Lemonade or singing her own songs, Ghana-born and Nashville-based singer/songwriter Ruby Amanfu’s voice is one you only have to hear once to remember forever. After releasing her first solo album, Smoke & Honey, in 2003 (single “Sugah” reached #3 on Billboard's air play charts), Amanfu earned Grammy recognition in 2007 for her co-writing effort on The Duhks’ “Heaven’s My Home.” For her most recent solo album, Standing Still, Amanfu interpreted songs of other writers ranging from Brandi Carlile to Woody Guthrie to Kanye West and her powerful vocals can be found on collaborations with artists ranging from Beyonce (“Don’t Hurt Yourself”) to Jack White (“Love Interruption”). Five record deals and two publishing deals later, Ruby is enjoying creative freedom as she prepares for the release of her next solo album. BAILEN When they’re not touring with jazz virtuoso Raul Midón, or starring on London’s West End in the hit show Close to You; Bacharach Reimagined, 25-year-old twins Daniel (Bass) and David Bailen (Drums) are playing and singing in three-part harmony with their 19-year-old sister Julia (Guitar) in their band BAILEN. Childhood friend Pierre Piscitelli (Keyboards) is the fourth member of BAILEN, and the only “non” Bailen, but the band says they are working on the paper work. The groups’ three-part sibling harmonies have been compared to The Fleet Foxes and The Staves, and Entertainment Weekly described them as having “vocal harmonies to rival Simon Garfunkel.” They have written music for Sons of Anarchy, Victoria’s Secret, Paper Magazine, Marc Jacobs, Ansel Elgort and can be heard on Raul Midón’s new album “Don’t Hesitate” as well as Jon Batiste and Stay Human’s “My NY.” They have performed internationally and are regular guests at Madison Square Garden for the National Anthem. This past year the band has been cultivating a presence in London, where they have played dozens of shows, recorded with Grammy winning engineer Ricardo Damian (Uptown Funk), and have garnered a faithful following within the London folk scene as well as in NYC. Alice Phoebe Lou Alice Phoebe Lou has an artistic confidence that belies her youth; her honest storytelling, vagabond spirit and beautiful voice have caught the ears of music lovers the world over. Alice grew up in South Africa indulging her love of arts and music. After finishing school, Alice’s path led to Berlin. Alice busked around Berlin with just her guitar and a small amplifier and her talent quickly garnered a cult following. The creative community there helped Alice grow musically and she collaborated with many musicians; including multi-instrumentalist Matteo who became Alice’s performance companion. 2016 sees Alice release her first studio album. Orbit comprises 9 jazz-influenced tracks encapsulating her fresh live style. Produced by Matteo and Kyson, the album features multiple collaborations and a different artist producing artwork for each track.
