Join the Savoy Seven as they pay tribute to Charlie Christian in his centennial year. Charlie Christian was the first great electric guitar soloist in jazz, performing with the Benny Goodman small combos from 1939-1941. Despite his tragic, early death in 1942, Christian profoundly influenced his contemporaries on all instruments, playing night after night at after hours jam sessions with every great name in jazz alive at the time. Every guitarist to ever pick up the instrument is indebted to Charlie Christian, not only for his bringing of the instrument to prominence as a solo voice, but as well in the vocuabulary and technique he pioneered on the instrument.
The Savoy Seven will pay tribute to Charlie, performing many of the Goodman small group numbers which made Charlie a household name amongst jazz fans, as well as original tunes composed in the Goodman small group style, and "jam style tunes" such as those Charlie might have played in after hours jam sessions.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Dancers: there will be a small amount of dance space, but you should come to this concert anyway. It's important music in the history of jazz!
