On June 20th, 2016, in the wake of the attack in on a nightclub patroned by LGBT people in Orlando, FL where 50 people lost their lives, the Senate failed to pass four measures on gun control. If you feel anything like I do, reading about and commenting on the news either online or in passing to friends and colleagues isn't enough. I'm craving conversations, face-to-face interaction, and the building of networks to voice collective concern about the inaction of Congress on measures that would make us safer.
I will be inviting several organizations including One Million Moms for Gun Control, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Americans for Responsible Solutions, and others to attend this impromptu rally on Saturday, July 2nd, and will request that any representatives they are able to send bring literature and suggestions for action. I hope that in the act of coming together to discuss where we are and where we would like to be, some of us may be inspired to create change at any and all levels of our lives through conversations that start this weekend. I hope these conversations continue until our Congress acts to mitigate the violence we have all become far too accustomed to.
If for no other reason than to stand together and voice our desire for change, I hope this rally will make us feel more connected to each other, and less powerless in the face of inaction by the people we have elected to enact laws that reflect our vision for what our country can be. I believe, flrmly, that we can do better.
Please feel free to invite any and everyone you think would be interested in joining a community of people who wish to come together to discuss action we can take to strengthen our voices as we call for action.
