Front Runners New York invites you to join us for a special event: The New York City Orlando Unity Run. We will stand up and run to recognize the grief wrought by last week’s tragedy and to show the world the diversity and pride of the NYC running community – LGBTQ members and straight allies alike.
The recent senseless tragedy in Orlando – where one act of hate ended 49 innocent lives and impacted countless more across the world – has reminded us, as Justice Kennedy wrote in his eloquent decision to legalize same-sex marriage just one year ago, that “we live through times when hate and fear seem stronger.” Even this, the most diverse city in the world, is not immune to threats against its LGBTQ citizens. During Saturday’s race in Queens, a member of Front Runners New York endured a homophobic confrontation with a fellow runner.
It is in these times that we as a running community rally together, to push past the pain and celebrate life. To remember those lost in Orlando, and to honor the LGBTQ and straight pioneers who have given so much before us so that we can stand proud without fear of hate today, we ask you to join us for this event. Your participation will symbolize the strength in numbers of good people who refuse to be kept down in the face of adversity. With this run, we unite.
We will gather on Wednesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at the Maine Monument, located at the South West corner of Central Park at Columbus Circle. After some brief remarks, we will run an easy, reflective loop of the park (or any distance participants can comfortably run/jog/walk), during which we encourage people to think about those directly impacted by this tragedy.
If you and your club are able to participate, we ask that to the extent possible, please have your runners wear brightly colored singlets or tech tees, shorts, socks, and other accessories, which together will represent the rainbow of people who make up our diverse running community. It is a night to show the world our bandwidth.
Please RSVP as it is important that we are able to share the overall expected number of participants with the CPC and NYPD.
