A majestic Beaux Arts rendition of a classical form, New York’s Grand Central Terminal rivaled the Eiffel Tower as one of the turn-of-the-century’s most dramatic architectural achievements. It symbolized the exploding intellectual and commercial reach of what was then the world’s second largest city.
Highlights of our tour include:
- A briefing on the tragedy that led to the terminal’s creation.
- An outline of the ingenious design scheme that moves people and possessions.
- The terminal’s history-making role in landmarking New York City’s architectural heritage.
- A visit to the Campbell Apartment, once the salon of ’20s mogul John W. Campbell.
- The historic roles played by Commodore Vanderbilt, Whitney Warren and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
- A visit to the Whispering Arch.
Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Joyce teaches Manhattan history at New York University and the New School.
Tour begins at 2 p.m. sharp, rain or shine. We meet at 89 East 42nd Street, under the Park Avenue Viaduct and just inside the entrance to Grand Central Terminal. Subway: 4/5/6/7/S to 42nd Street/Grand Central. Open-ended mixer begins about 4 p.m. in the Grand Central Oyster Bar; refreshments on your own.
