Jonathan Safran Foer’s enigmatic publication is at once a novel and a piece of art created by cutting into the pages of The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz, with the incisions allowing words on subsequent pages to project through to the present to arrive at a new narrative. Utilizing Foer’s merging of genres and sculptural technique as a point of departure, Tree of Codes is a new, evening-length work that features a site-specific environment by Studio Olafur Eliasson. His ever evolving set reinvents the performance space, with a shape-shifting kaleidoscope of light, color, and reflective mirrors that challenges preconceived notions of the role of the viewer from the moment they enter the drill hall.
Fifteen soloists and dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, performing to an original score by Jamie xx, interact with and respond to the setting through direction by award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor. The result is a new type of modern dance that layers classical and contemporary styles with visual wizardry and sonic imagination in this highly-anticipated U.S. premiere.
