The national LGBT Center Awareness Day is an annual day of awareness promoting the vital services offered by community centers and the central role they play in local communities. The day was planned to help bring national attention to the Community Center Movement within the LGBT movement, which serves over 40,000 people weekly, and highlight the ways that people can get involved or utilize their local centers.
We are making an open call for the community volunteers to spread the word about BCPC's activities in the Downtown Brooklyn area as a part of the National LGBT Center Awareness Day. Help spread the word about BCPC and our programs here in the community!!! We will host an outreach orientation at 11AM at the Center and will send our volunteers to do some community outreach from 12PM to 2PM in the Downtown Brooklyn area. If you are interested, drop an e-mail to tomas@lgbtbrooklyn.org.
We are happy to provide space and support for the initiatives by the members of the local LGBTQ community. The national LGBT Center Awareness Day at BCPC will feature an art opening "OUT THERE" by the local activist artists. The art opening reception will start at 6:30PM.
“OUT THERE" is a new group art exhibit presented by BCPC featuring the recent work of artists Lawrence Graham Brown, La Buruquena, Charly Joaquin Dominguez, Arismendy Feliz, Edwin Gonzalez-Ojeda, Alex “Alukotron” Lutomirski, Jae Quinlan, Carlo Quispe, Zilka Rosa Molinar, Maine Smith, Joya Angola Thompson, and Benito Valadie.
“OUT THERE” examines the idea of what the “LGBTQ” identity is and conceptually explores the subject both politically and symbolically. Conceived originally from the social term “out there” which typically describes an individual who’s either flamboyant, bizarre, or outlandish this highly imaginative, honest, even inquisitive exhibit portrays this theme unabashedly. From the provocative to the sublime “OUT THERE” features a unique mix of local and international LGBTQ identified contemporary artists whose works not only of reflect aspects of sexual identity but also comments on a variety of universal themes and/or present day social issues.
This exhibit is curated by Ricardo Osmondo Francis, a mixed media artist and curator. Francis is also the Gallery Director of LeonidesArts NY and serves as Curator in Residence at the Brooklyn Community Pride Center.
In the course of the evening our guests and community members will be addressed by our Executive Director Erin Drinkwater and the curator of “OUT THERE” Ricardo Francis. Award winning out singer/songwriter Nick Deutsch will deliver an intimate acoustic performance for our guest.
Over the years BCPC has grown to serve Brooklyn’s LGBT community. And this time, we are bringing our FABULOUS family under one roof to celebrate the annual LGBT Community Center Awareness Day.
