Dr. Marci Bowers, M.D., of Burlingame, Calif., is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of Genital Reassignment Surgery and is the first transgender woman to perform transgender surgery.
Dr. Bowers is a pelvic and gynecologic surgeon with nearly 25 years’ experience in Women’s Healthcare and working with the Transgender community. There, she practiced as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at The Polyclinic and Swedish Medical Center.
She left Seattle in 2003 to join the legendary Dr. Stanley Biber, considered the “father of Transgender Surgery”. In 2010, she relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and has now performed more than 1250 primary MTF/FTM Genital Reassignment Surgeries. In 2013, Dr. Bowers was recruited to operate and revive the transgender surgery program in Tel Aviv, Israel. She is sought after as a speaker and worldwide surgical educator.
Dr. Bowers is a member of WPATH, and serves on the board of directors for both GLAAD and the Transgender Law Center. Dr. Bowers has become an international authority on clitoral reconstruction for women who have suffered Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), one of a select few surgeons worldwide performing FGM reversal. She has been the subject of numerous documentaries, articles and features including appearances on Oprah, CBS Sunday Morning and Discovery Health.
Dr. Bowers was recently honored as one of the 100 most influential LGBT people on the Guardian’s 2012 World Pride Power List, in addition to being recognized as one of Huffington Post’s 50 Transgender Icons.
Dr. Bowers will be providing informal consultations after the presentation.
