Elizabeth Taylor stars as a young woman who, at the insistence of her wealthy aunt (Katherine Hepburn) is being evaluated to receive a lobotomy after witnessing the death of her cousin. For the legendary Latina drag queen Barbra Herr – who started out in Times Square’s Sally’s Hideaway before owning the stages of Escualita, The Monster, and Friend’s Tavern -- the film’s depiction of violence against homosexuals “is still alive and well in our society today in this country and all over the world.”
As always, our screening will be followed by drinks and discussion at Julius Bar (159 West 10th St. at Waverly), the oldest gay bar in New York City!
BARBRA HERR
Barbra Herr began her career in San Juan, Puerto Rico at 17, mastered her stagecraft — and garnered cult status on the San Juan (aka “Gay Mecca”) disco scene. After touring the club and hotel circuits on Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, she returned to her native NY to conquer the iconic 1990s drag scene. We’re talking Sally’s in old-school, down-and-dirty Times Square (it’s the infamous club featured at the intro and climax of “Paris is Burning,” children), the original incarnation of Escuelita (“To Wong Foo’s” John Leguizamo and Patrick Swayze checked out her act) and even the historic Apollo Theater. Lady Bunny once declared Barbra Herr a “hysterical, great old-school Latina lip-synch artiste from the days of Sally’s Hideaway — and still going strong!”
