Dig Deeper is honored to present legends of ska, rocksteady, and reggae - the three original members of The Gaylads - Harris "B.B." Seaton, Maurice Roberts, and Winston Delano Stewart in their first ever show together outside of Jamaica, performing this time under the name The Conscious Minds and backed by Crazy Baldhead, who will be opening the night with their own set.
The Gaylads formed in the heat of ska's popularity in 1964, recording numerous singles with producer Coxsone Dodd including "Lady with the red dress," "Stop making love," "Message to my girl," and the minor key masterpiece "Morning sun," regularly providing backing vocals to other artists Dodd was producing at the time including Ken Boothe.
As ska gave way to the slower more soulful sounds of rocksteady, the Gaylads' harmonies had more of a chance to emerge in the studio on songs like "Joy in the morning," "A.B.C. Rocksteady," "Over the rainbow's end" and "Hard to confess" – the last few of these with producer Sonia Pottinger.
The group remained active until the early 1970s, just edging into the early reggae era with the incomparable (and sadly quite rare) "Let's do the reggae" (aka "Love the reggae"), "There's a fire" and "My Jamaican girl".
For this special once in a lifetime show, the Gaylads will be performing a set of their classics from all parts of their career from ska to early reggae and all points in between.
Guest DJ Scratch Famous from Deadly Dragon Sound System will be joining Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky selecting records for the dancefloor before and after the live sets. Wear your dancing shoes - you will need them!
