Writing in the Wall Street Journal during Henry Butler’s November 2011 engagement at Jazz Standard, Larry Blumenfeld put it this way: “Mr. Butler has made music on his own terms throughout his life. New Orleans, where he was born and raised, claims him within its lineage of distinctive piano virtuosos. This frame fits his impressive technical skills and innate sense of rhythm but fails to acknowledge his range. His 1986 debut recording [Fivin’Around, Impulse!] featured stellar modern–jazz players: bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Billy Higgins and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. On his 1990 album Orleans Inspiration, he led hometown funk heroes, including guitarist Leo Nocentelli. By the late ‘90s, he was immersed in Delta blues, notably in collaboration with guitarist and singer Corey Harris. But recordings hardly tell the story. These days, in performance, segueing from, say, an Allen Toussaint hit to a Thelonious Monk composition, categories simply fall away.” For this unusual four–night stand, Henry Butler will dazzle listeners with his solo piano work on March 21–22, then return to perform with his superb trio on March 23–24. Any way he plays it, Henry Butler will demonstrate that (as he told the WSJ) “repertoire is always just a starting point. It's colored with my preludes, which could start anywhere, might get atonal or funky or go wherever I choose. If I had to just play a blues as a blues, play jazz just like jazz, maybe I'd do something else for a living.”
