Half Drag: A Different Kind of Beauty
photographic exhibition by Leland Bobbe
New York photographer Leland Bobbé captures the two sides of NYC's drag queens -- the extravagantly made-up drag divas and the organic men that lie beneath. In an interview, Bobbé told Huffington Post, "Through the power of hair and makeup these men are able to completely transform themselves and find their female side while simultaneously showing their male side. Shockingly, the identities are composed in camera and are not separate images joined during editing." The men in the photographs range in age and race, encompassing a broad spectrum. The juxtaposition of the photographs provides a unique moment of destabilization where the viewer can both appreciate and question contemporary gender roles. Bobbé, a native New Yorker has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. His work spans both the fine art and commercial and likewise has been shown in galleries and utilized by advertising agencies around the country. For more on Bobbé, click here
