About GLOBE:
...
GLOBE is a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer people primarily from communities of color in Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Brownsville and other parts of central and north Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower our communities through organizing and education. Our membership is intergenerational, ranging from age 14-50+.
The group was founded in the late nineties to provide a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ people in Bushwick. The group's name, GLOBE, originally stood for "Gays and Lesbians of Bushwick Empowered". However, in order to be more inclusive of transgender, bisexual and other queer and questioning community members, we decided to drop the acronym and change the name to GLOBE: A Group To Support and Empower the Bushwick LGBT Community.
As we grew bigger, we also decided that in addition to providing a safe space, we also wanted to more directly confront oppression and discrimination that we faced within public schools, on the job, and in the streets. We believe that LGBTQ people from the outer boroughs shouldn't have to go to the Village or to Chelsea, in Manhattan, to feel safe. Globe is one of the few New York City groups founded by, led and constituted by low-income LGBT people of color organizing around public policy issues that have impact at the city-wide, state-wide and national level.
GLOBE is the LGBTQ Justice Project of Make the Road New York in Brooklyn.
What We Do
No Homophobia or Transphobia in Our Communities!
Many of our members have experienced violence and harassment on the street because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. For this reason, we have organized protests and vigils, opposing the violence that still permeates in our community. As they come up, we support efforts to pass GENDA; we offer legal defense from housing and employment discrimination and police discrimination and harassment. We are currently working on three campaigns:
Police Accountability Campaign:
GLOBE is part city-wide coalition of groups to end NYPD’s Stop, Question and Frisk policy. We want to introduce legislation to hold police accountable for unjust and biased practices. We need fair and just policing, not criminalization in our communities.
Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Employment Discrimination Campaign:
Although New York City adopted language in its Human Rights Law protecting transgender people from employment discrimination, there are still numerous cases of individuals being discriminated against because of their gender identity and/or their gender expression. GLOBE has launched its employment discrimination campaign to ensure that Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming folks have the same access to employment that all New Yorkers are entitled to have!
Safe Schools for All Campaign:
According to recent surveys by the Gay Lesbian Schools and Education Network, a majority of LGBT students experience harassment or violence in school. GLOBE has taken the initiative to fight bullying by going into high schools in Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvensant and do Homophobia and Transphobia workshops with all students and staff. In addition, we identify leaders at each school who want to start their own GSA and provide support for them through out the school year. This year we already celebrated Pride Week at the Bushwick Campus and we are in the middle of Pride Week at Paul Robeson High School Campus.
