About Braking the Cycle http://www.brakingthecycle.org & http://www.housingworks.org
Three decades into the AIDS epidemic, the crisis rolls on. Its less visible now, but every year 50,000 more Americans are diagnosed with HIV. It still destroys peoples lives AIDS still kills and takes away loved ones from their friends and families. The expense and psychological toll leave people not just at risk medically, but at risk of homelessness as well. Its these twin crises of homelessness and AIDS that Housing Works tackles head-on. Their theory is elegantly simple: In order to fight AIDS, you need to stabilize your life first. Housing Works started there 25 years ago by advocating for housing rights for people living with HIV/AIDS. Since then, theyve expanded their work to include a comprehensive range of services such as housing, medical care, case management, legal support, job training, mental health, and substance use counseling allowing HIV-positive individuals to take their lives forward again. Particularly attuned to the needs of the LGBT community, minorities, women, and low-income populations, Housing Works proudly helps all people who need their services. They advocate locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally to ensure a voice for all people living with HIV/AIDS.
This is important work, and it costs money. Thats where BRAKING THE CYCLE comes in. Were more than a bike ride were a civil rights march on two wheels. From Boston on September 28th, all the way to New York City on September 30th, we'll create a moving community for the fight against AIDS. Well raise a lot of money, yes, but well do so much more. Well support each other, spread the word that the AIDS crisis continues, and show that there are still people committed to ending the epidemic. From all walks of life, we come together to take this stand. In short...
...this is where the ribbon meets the road.
