***** A disappointment!
Posted: October 30, 2009
I've been to the Eagle about 3 times...it is much different than other Eagle's around the country in that they will definitely put a stop to any playing around you do. And yet, guys still try....until a flashlight comes violently at them. The bartenders were nice to me, but I can see that they are sassy and sarcastic queens - not masculine men that I'd hope they'd be. Music---sucks. Really bad.

***** Only Leather Bar in Town

Good leather bar. Fun Beer Blast but some of the Bartenders there have attitudes that they need to leave at home.

***** Jockstrap Wednesdays = Empty Wednesdays
Posted: May 24, 2009
Supposedly Wednesdays are for hot guys in jockstraps. It was older guys in jockstraps, some that definitely didn't need to be. Very cruisy and action going on around every corner. I went with a non-drinker who asked for a soda at the bar. When he asked about being charged $4 for a soda, the bartender ridiculed him as being from out of town. My friend is from Brooklyn. $4/soda is just outrageous. Besides the place being dirty and dead, the attitude was the icing on the cake. Will not be going back, wouldn't recommend it.

You'll make out better in the chat rooms. I agree about the music, all disco-era stuff. the bartenders should not be shirtless, just my opinion, they have those Jello-pecs.

***** TRULY BAD
Posted: January 02, 2009
I went here New Years Eve with 2 buddies from Germany, both nice looking guys. Patrons at Eagle look frozen in time, 1977 to be precise. No one spoke to us, even when we tried. We did overhear some impassioned conversations about gemstones, Judy Garland and Liza. The coatcheck guy and bartenders, except for one Brazilian man, were very hostile. The drinks were weak. A lot of very queeny CPAs in harnesses shimmying to loud Donna Summer. Music is all that old disco stuff like I Will Survive. Nice upstairs smoking roof. No back room at all, just an open room where the old queens glare at a TV screen and peek nervously at each other. Very tense atmosphere.

***** Ugh!

When I was there the place was a furnace. The guys had vile attitudes and it was way too crowded. The bartenders were rude, though pretty damn hot. My least favorite bar in NYC, without a doubt.

***** Great bar well worht the effort

While it is a bit dark inside, and a bit off the beaten track, its a great bar, with a great range of men. The garden bar at around 7pm on a Sunday is not to be missed! I will certainly be returning there on my next visit to NY!

***** Pretty Hot -- if a bit pre-Stonewall
Posted: May 21, 2007
Tried this place on a Wednesday, and then a Saturday. Wednesday only the second level was open, and the place had a more intimate feel, with a very friendly bartender and customers. On Saturday it was packed on two levels, and a few people were trickling up to the roof garden, which has its own bar. On the plus side, there's MEN of all different types and ages, both into and not into the leather scene. On the negative side, the lighting is so low it reminds one of a 70's bar back when you were supposed to be ashamed of what you were doing. Take a potential date up to the roof garden so that you and he can get a better look at each other and avoid surprises -- you could run into your hated ex-lover in this place and not even know it. On weekends the first floor seems to be taken over for special events and has loud, headache-inducing DJs and announcers. Head up to the second floor where the cruising goes on and you can hear yourself think. Some of the guys are very friendly; others are full of attitude or act like they're in a library, afraid to talk too loud. It's those damn low lights of course. Whatever its flaws, this is a pretty hot bar. Be a bit careful of the neighborhood late at night. Unless you're bi, don't wander accidentally into the topless bar down the block. Be advised that on Thursdays a dress code of leather regalia is strictly enforced.

While I like the leather/bear scene, these guys tend to be more on the stuck up side of the genre. Ok, so you guys are built, handsome, and look good in leather... but is being a snob about it really necessary? Don't fall off your pedistals, you might scratch a sequin.

I'm not really into the Leather/Levi scene, but I love this place. Many levels, great beer & bartenders, a Roof Deck to die for.. A good time was had by all! You really feel welcome even if you aren't one of the boyz..

***** Where the men are men
First to Review - October 19, 2005 - Visited: October 2005
While this isn't my scene, this bar certainly does the leather/levis scene right...and isn't too unfriendly to out-of-costume visitors. Above 2 floors of dark, maze-like bar, the roofdeck offers about the best outdoor space to be found in any NYC gay bar. Be slighltly cautious in the bathrooms...as you encounter unwanted (or perhaps wanted exposure to others' fetishes.
